Biggest attraction of watching IPL on TV!!

Yes, I know, I know, it is the cheerleaders..but there is something also which has caught the fascination and the attention of the TV audience is the new series of Vodafone adverstisements, using ZOOZOO'S. During the initial phase of IPL2, every day they released a new ad using the ZooZoo's and it was an instant hit. I enjoyed these cartoon characters like thing as it looked funny and at the same time, the message it wants to convey is also clear. Vodafone advertisements are always popular and who can forget their earlier series "Happy to Help" involving a cute little girl and a puppy. They are back again with these ZOOZOO's. These ZooZoo's are widely believed as animated ones but the truth is that they are real humans. They are shot in South Africa, where the earlier "Happy to Help" series was also shot. Getting these advertisements are all good but the general refrain is Vodafone can also spend some energy and money in de-congesting their network, which is pathetically bad!! I got the below mail as a forward along with the photographs taken during the shoot of theses series. Enjoy reading and watching these ZooZoo's as well, along with the cheerleaders on TV!!!
ZooZoo - The Mail forward:
No, they aren’t animated characters. They are human beings who were made to wear body suits. “The design of the characters is such that one gets fooled into thinking it is animation,” shrugs Rao, which was indeed the very illusion that had to be created. “In a sense, it is ‘live’ animation!” he quips, referring to the fact that it was all shot live.
Prakash Varma, ad filmmaker, Nirvana Films, has directed the commercials, and reveals that the Zoozoos were a big challenge to create. The practical aspects of how they will move, talk, gesticulate and emote were very important. Essentially, costume design and artwork were crucial elements.
“It took me three weeks of pre-production to understand how it will work,” says Varma. There were two fabrics that were considered for the body suits, and one was rejected for it had too many wrinkles and was shiny. The wrinkles would have shown when the characters moved, thereby shattering the illusion of animation. “So we chose the more practical, thicker fabric,” Varma explains.
The production team divided the outfit into two parts: the body and the head. The body part of the outfit was stuffed with foam in some places, while the head was attached separately. To make it look bigger than a human head, a harder material called Perspex was used, which in turn was stuffed with foam (with scope for ventilation).
If one wishes to understand the size of this head, here’s a fact: a human head would typically reach up to the mouth level of this giant Zoozoo head. “We kept the hands and legs thin, which is why we cast women – and occasionally children – wearing the costumes,” says Varma. The thin limbs, contrasted with big bellies and a bulbous head, all add to the illusion that these creatures are ‘smaller’ than humans. Sets were created to suit the size of the Zoozoos. Cinematically, this ‘size’ was a trick: the creatures look smaller than they actually are on screen, to portray a different world of sorts. For this, the speed of shooting was altered: Nirvana shot it in a high-speed format to make them look the size that they do. Furthermore, simple sets/backdrops were created and spray painted with neutral Greys – a colour of choice so that attention isn’t diverted from the main characters. For a supposedly ‘outdoor’ shot, even the shadow of a Zoozoo was kept ‘live’ and not done in post production: it was painted in a darker shade of grey on the ground. An even lighting was maintained throughout. There was virtually no post production work done. The films were shot by Nirvana in Cape Town, South Africa, with the help of a local production house there, called Platypus. Incidentally, the same combination of people also worked on the ‘Happy to Help’ series last year. When asked whether Cape Town is fast becoming a tourist spot for Vodafone and Nirvana, Varma laughs, saying, “Oh no! It’s just that we are very comfortable with the team there and know what sort of work to expect from them.” Nagpal adds here that the production cost had to be minimal for unveiling such a large number of commercials. “Otherwise, our production costs would exceed media spends,” he quips.

Nano - the latest sensation from Tata Motors!!

Tata Motors' "Nano" the latest sensation in the recent Auto Expo has made everybody turn and have a closer look at the car. Nano, as we all know is the cheapest car in the world and it satisfies all the latest safety and emission norms. All for less than USD3000. Too good to be true, but its true!! It is truly a great achievement for Tata Motors and makes us even more proud because the complete design and engineering is done by Indians, led by 37 year old Mr Girish Wagh and his 500 member technical team. To read more about him and the team which created Nano, click this link.

The car has been beautifully designed and very pleasant on the eyes. It closely resembles the new version of Zen Estilo but the comparison stops there. There have been radical changes to the way a car has been designed. The engine is on the rear side and the boot space is at the front. For your information, Tata Nano has a boot space to accomodate only one suitcase!! All possible measures have been adapted to cut the cost to the minimum. The car is 8% smaller than Maruti 800 but Tata claims it has 21% more space compared to M 800. I am not able to understand how it could have 21% more space. I leave it to the mathematical wizards and the engineering brains. Tata Nano is set to change the landscape of Indian Automobile industry in a big way as well it would change the Indian roads. Tata claims that the car would give you a mileage of 20 kms per litre of petrol. The car would be priced at Rs1.40 lakhs (on road) and would definitely be very attractive to the burgeoning Indian Middle-class to satisfy their dreams of having a car.

Okay, after all the good things about Nano lets look at the controversies surrounding it as well. Mamta Banerjee has made a political statement saying that Tatas should give 10 lakh Nano cars free because of the freebies they have got for the Singur plant. She claims that Tata's have been given land worth 1000 crores free of cost and as well as innumerable tax concessions from the Government. Turning little serious, lets look at the important questions:
  • Do we require a car like Nano considering the environmental impact?
  • Does our cities have the infrastructure to support these kind of smaller and cheaper cars?
  • How popular this car would be? Who are possible owners of this car?
Already our Indian city roads are completely choked and no way we will be able to find space for these kind of cars. There is already a big hue and cry about the increased pollution in cities which would result due to the large number of Nano cars expected on the roads. Dr Pachouri, the nobel laureate was very vocal in opposing these kind of experiments as it directly leads to higher pollution levels and global warming.

Though the car is highly efficient in terms of mileage, but just compare it to the motorcycles. An average motorcycle gives you a mileage of 45 kms per litre of petrol whereas Nano offers 20 kms under standard testing conditions. Tata is expecting the motorcycle wallahs to upgrade to Nano. They definitely need to spend a lot more on fuel. Rajiv Bajaj of Bajaj Auto, who incidentally showcased his compact car in the Auto expo, believes that the running costs plays a very crucial role in the purchase decisions of a car. Will the motorcycle wallahs be ready to spend that extra amount of money. I doubt it!

One way of answering all the questions related to pollution, environmental impact, traffic congestion is to market the cars exclusively in the rural, non-urban centres and export it to countries where there is a need for fuel efficient cars. It will be definitely be a popular choice in rural areas and also help to provide our rural population the advantages of urban India. It would also be a huge hit with the western countries where there is a demand for cars with high fuel efficiency.

Entry level car - Maruti Wagon R or Hyundai Santro!

The biggest dilemma faced by the first time car buyers in India is to either go for Maruti Wagon R or Hyundai Santro. I too faced it two years ago and I decided to go with Hyundai Santro. The same sort of dilemma was faced by two people I know in the last couple of weeks. As usual lot of discussions, analysis happened before they finally decided on their choice. Incidentally, both of them decided to go for Hyundai Santro GLS compared to Maruti Wagon R VXI.

The major points which were discussed are:

1. Price: The price of Santro GLS is Rs359,000/- compared to Rs380,000 for the Wagon R. The prices are after the dealer discounts. Straight away there is a price differential of Rs21,000/-.

2. Product differentiation: Both Santro GLS and Wagon R VXI are homogenous in the sense that both comes with power steering, power windows, air-conditioning, central locking, floor mats. Therefore, there is no big product differentiation. Hyundai Dealer, DSC Hyundai has agreed to provide further benefits in the form of accessories like car cover, teflon paint coating, steering wheel cover etc.,

3. Mileage: Santro GLS gives you a mileage of 11.5 kms in city driving conditions almost identical to Wagon R. On the highway, Santro gives you a mileage of 14 kms. Both the mileage are when you drive with A/C on.

4. After sales service: I have experienced excellent after sales service from DSC Hyundai. They are very prompt and courteous. They even conduct training sessions for new car buyers. I guess even Maruti dealers would offer the same kind of service, if not more.

5. Looks: Santro wins hands down as far as the looks are concerned. Wagon R's biggest dis-advantage I guess is its soap-box like look from the top and a plain look from the back. Santro on the other hand looks elegant from all angles.

6. Service network and spare parts: The much touted advantage of Maruti is its wide network and availability of cheaper spare parts. I think the extensive network is not going to be tested with a small car where it is never going to be driven across the country. It is primarily for city driving. The spare parts of Maruti is cheaper but at what frequency you are going to change spare parts in a new car.

7. Space: The clincher in the decision making process is the space. Here again, Santro is unbeatable as far the space in the rear seat. It can comfortably accomodate 3 normal sized adults whereas in Wagon R the third person has to real squeeze in. Now the important question comes up of how many times you are going to travel with 5 persons on board. Yes, it is true that it may not be always but imagine you having a driver to drive you around. Typically a normal middle class household in India is made up of the husband, wife and the parents or in laws. Maruti Wagon R would not be a comfortable option in this scenario.

I have been driving Santro for the last 20 months with no complaints and I would recommend it to other entry level car buyers. Considering the price and the features, Santro GLS is a definitely a good buy!

Shell petrol pumps stop selling unleaded petrol!!

I am regular user of Shell Petrol for the last 2 years or so. Shell has a petrol pump at Vadapalani which is closer to my home. Shell provides two variants of Petrol - Unleaded Petrol and Super Unleaded petrol. I normally use unleaded petrol for my car. Today when I went to Shell for filling up the tank, I was told that with effect from 28 Dec 2007, Shell Petrol pump would not be selling unleaded petrol instead would be selling Shell Super Unleaded. What is the big deal? Yes, Shell Super Unleaded petrol costs Rs4.10 paise more than the normal unleaded petrol.

Shell is issuing a pamphlet to all drive-in customers mentioning clearly the reasons for the same:
1. The subsidy scenario not being a level playing field, with only the Public Sector Units (read HPCL, BPCL, IOC) being provided with subsidies;

2. Shell's inability to keep prices artificially low in the absence of subsidies, while continuing to deliver value.

Note: Words in Red and Italic were added by me and not mentioned in the Shell pamphlet.

India follows the Administered Price Mechanism (APM) for pricing of petro products. The administered price mechanism is applicable to all companies which sells petro products in the retail market. The administered price of petro-products was last changed by the Government of India some 6 months ago, I guess. The international oil prices have moved up since then resulting in oil marketing companies bleeding heavily. Government forces the oil marketing companies including the private players like Reliance, Essar and Shell to sell at the pre-determined prices. Both private and public sector oil marketing companies make sizeable losses on a daily basis but PSU oil marketing companies are compensated by the government in the form of subsidies and oil bonds.
Private retailers cant get any subsidy from the Government even after Reliance using all its might trying to influence the Government in this regard. All this being done by the Government for the benefit of you and me and also helping them to keep the inflation at lower levels artifically during the election year!! Now the Gujarat elections are over and Congress being completely drubbed, I expect a petrol price hike in January 2008.

I have been told by many people that ESSAR and Reliance used to close down their retail outlets for many months in the past due to unfavourable retail prices fixed by the Government. This time, Shell is doing it differently. Rather than closing the shop, it is not selling low price unleaded petrol. It is forcing customers to buy the costly super unleaded petrol. This would help Shell India to cut down on the losses. Shell claims it uses propriety additives that are eveloped by the R&D team at Shell Global Solutions, which helps to clean out deposits which lead to better responsiveness and improved fuel economy.

What should I do now? Switch to other PSU oil marketing companies like HPCL, BPCL etc., I guess not, because my experience tells me that I get more mileage from Shell's fuel compared to other companies. Adulteration and the cheating in the quantity in most of the other PSU's retailers deter me from moving to them. The service levels in a Shell Petrol Pump is entirely different from PSU petrol pumps and it is uniform across the city. The customer gets treated properly with due respect and attention. There can be exceptions of one or two PSU petrol pumps selling good quality fuel and better customer service, but overall I rate the quality as poor.

I am a loyal customer of Shell and as the Shell ad-lines goes: I swear by Shell. Let me give it a try with Shell Super Unleaded Petrol and see for myself how it helps in better mileage and engine performance.
