Yesterday I watched two English movies back to back in Star Movies, thanks to the sub-titles!! Otherwise, it would be very difficult to follow them to the last word and I have to assume this is what they would have spoken.
"The Nanny Diaries" starring Scarlett Johansson, is a story of a college graduate taking up a role of a nanny of a 5 year old boy in Manhattan, New York. The movie captures the lifestyle of the New York Investment Bankers and their relationships. It has a great mix of emotion and comedy and I enjoyed it. Finally, as in our Tamil cinema, the film delivers a message which is how important mother and father in the life of a kid. What I am really impressed with is the acting of Scarlett Johansson as a nanny. She has handled the role very well and the screenplay is perfect and you start looking forward to what happens next. The film has a IMDB rating of 6.1 on a scale of 10.
The second film I saw was Runaway Bride starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. With this heavy star cast it was no doubt a high profile movie but I felt that it doesnt have anything worth writing about. The story was very weak and the logic was a big casualty. I was surprised to know that it has been nominated for various awards in 2000 but didnt win anything major. It doesnt deserve to win. It was categorised as a comedy but it looked so amateurish to me. Julia Roberts and Richard Gere are seasoned actors therefore you cant fault their performance. But beyond that there was nothing. Rightly, it has a IMDB rating of only 5.2 out of 10.
In both the movies, what caught my attention is the flawless execution on a very thin story line. The acting of the lead actors were very intense and natural. There is no bit of exaggeration of emotions, which is what I liked.
Though Runaway bride was yoo-yooing for some time, a constant flow of bhajji's made me sit glued to the seat!! Sunday afternoon, a plate full of onion, potato and capsicum bhajis doesnt allow you to think of anything and if it is followed by a cup of filter coffee.. you cant ask for more. Isnt?

if u get a chance watch The Curious Case of Benjamin Button ,i was forced to watch this movie as i had free tickets on sunday 3.30pm show with less interest i enterted the theatre but frankly its a master piece. direction,screenplay ,every aspect of film making was excellent. it deserves more than 3 oscars.

Sure, will try to watch Benjamin Button. I know these English movies does have a magic about them..but not sure when.. I am not kinda person who goes and watches English movies regularly.. I usually watch these things at home.. so I guess I may wait for the movie to be shown in UTV World movies or Star Movies.
One of my friend, makes it a point to visit Burma Bazar and picks up DVD's of good English movies and watches them.. I dont have the patience..but I keep borrowing from him once in a while..Funny thing is I have not returned many of his DVD's and they are lying with me now.. Poor guy he is.. I should return back to him..
