Porur Junction will have a flyover!

The Porur Junction which connects Mount Poonamalle Road with Arcot Road is one of the busiest junctions in Chennai, I would say. A flyover to ease the flow of traffic is long overdue at this place. Finally, it is happening at Porur. As per the latest research, the number of PCU (Passenger Cars Unit) crossing Porur Junction during peak hours have crossed 14000 whereas the Government guidelines stipulate that wherever there is more than 10000 PCU's per hour, that location should have a flyover. You can read the latest article about this in The Hindu here.

With the kind of developments happening on the stretch of Arcot Road between Vadapalani and Porur, the flyover is an absolute need of the hour. Just to list down the major real estate development activities which would be completed by June 2009 are as follows:

1. Residential complex of 350 houses being constructed by Appasamy Real Estates very close to the Vadapalani Bus Terminus.
2. Residential and Commercial complex being constructed by Ceebros on the old Shyamala Studios plot.
3. Residential complex by Jamals on the Arcot Road near Avichi School.
4. Chandra Mall coming on the old National Theatre plot in Virugumbakkam. This is going to have a multiplex with 5 screens of Adlabs Fame chain.

Rumours are abound that the discount shop Saravana Stores of T Nagar is going to be set up at Alwarthirunagar and Hotel Saravana Bhavan coming up at Lakshmi Nagar.

All these activities are on the main Arcot Road and you can imagine how many small projects would be coming up in the roads connecting to Arcot Road. Therefore, the trafffic is going to go crazy on the Arcot Road even after the Porur flyover. The urgent need is the extension of the Arcot Road by atleast 10 feet on both sides of the road on a war footing. Will the Chennai Corporation and Valasaravakkam Muncipality bite the bullet on road extension?
